Évariste Galois (1811-1832) was a French mathematician and a genius whose contributions to algebra pointed in new directions. Unfortunately, his life and contributions were cut short by his early death, the result of a duel. His collected works, or Oeuvres, were first published in book form in 1897.

The “Introduction” to the work summarizes Galois’ accomplishments and his relations with other mathematicians of his period.
