The Math Origins series explores the early uses and development of mathematical symbols and terminology common in undergraduate mathematics today. Each article views some of the original sources where the concepts appeared in print, often for the first time. The authors' original intentions and goals are also part of the story—often the original problem has become disconnected with the concept first used to solve it. We look back through the centuries to see the birth of these concepts, and their gradual evolution over time.
