Acknowledgments

I would like to thank the librarians at Franklin and Marshall College who found both an online and hard copy of the first edition of this book. With the assistance of a librarian at NYU, they found an online copy of the fourth edition.

I would also like to thank my former student and current colleague, Daniel Droz (F&M ’10, Penn State ’16) for proofreading the translation and typesetting assistance.

About the Author

Alan Levine received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Stony Brook University in 1983. Since then, he has taught at Franklin and Marshall College, retiring at the end of 2022. He often taught courses in probability and stochastic processes, where Markov's name is featured prominently.

He became interested in translating some of Markov's writings in 2017 when one of his students was completing a joint major in both Russian and mathematics and needed a project to connect the two disciplines. Together, they translated the first three chapters. After the student graduated in 2018—and the subsequent long pause due to COVID—he completed the project in 2022.
