Mathematical Treasure: Warren Colburn's First Lessons

Author(s):
Frank J. Swetz (The Pennsylvania State University)

Warren Colburn (1793–1833) was born in Massachusetts. He attended Harvard College and graduated with honors. Colburn wrote a series of elementary mathematics texts intended for children. He attempted to use the then most up-to-date methods of instruction, employing psychological methods. This 1863 printing of his First Lessons in Intellectual Arithmetic (1821) is an example of his educational philosophy.

Colburn even chose the blackboard exercises to be given to students.
