The Kerala School of Mathematics and Astronomy flourished in Southern India in the fourteen and fifteenth centuries. Among its participants was the astronomer and mathematician Neelakanta Somayaji (1444-1544) who is credited with developing series expansions for the common trigonometric functions. His best known work, written on palm leaves, is called Tantrasangraha [or Tantrasamgraha] (1501).
