Mathematical Treasure: Oberto Cantone’s Uso prattico dell'aritmetica e geometria

L'vso prattico dell' aritmetica e geometria by Oberto Cantone was published in 1599. Cantone was a 16th-century Italian mathematician and a professor in Naples. He is best remembered for his work concerning the mathematical needs of the merchant community. His The practical use of arithmetic was inspired by other early modern treatises of the same kind, particularly the arithmetic of Pietro Borghi, which may be viewed in Mathematical Treasures. Cantone’s title page and a page showing forms of numbers are depicted below.

A second edition of this work was published in 1606. The title page and part of the multiplication table are shown.
