Mathematical Treasure: Mary Boole on the Teaching of Algebra

Mary Everest Boole (1832-1916) was the wife of the British mathematician George Boole. A self-trained mathematician in her own right, she authored several works on didactical aspects of mathematics: the psychology of learning mathematics and methods of teaching the subject. One of Mary Boole’s last published works was Philosophy and Fun of Algebra, published in 1909. The work attempted to introduce new thinking into the learning and teaching of mathematics, but still reflects the Victorian background and beliefs of the author.
