Although Nicholas Lobachevsky (1792-1856) first devised his theories for hyperbolic geometry in the years 1829-30, they were not immediately available to the larger mathematical community. His work had been published in Russian in the Kazan Messenger, a periodical of limited readership. It was not until the publication of his work in German by the Berlin Academy of Science in 1840 that his discoveries became more widely known.
