Mathematical Treasure: Hankel's History of Mathematics

Author(s):

In the late 19th century, attempts among German mathematicians to obtain a better understanding of the origins and foundations of mathematics resulted in a renewed interest in the history of mathematics. Reflecting this interest, several books on the subject were published. Zur Geschichte der Mathematik in Alterthum und Mittelalter (On the History of Mathematics in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, 1874) by Hermann Hankel was one of these. Hermann Hankel (1839-1873) was a German mathematician who worked and studied with such mathematics notables as Möbius, Riemann, and Weierstrass. The title page of his history of mathematics is shown above.
