Mathematical Treasure: De Morgan’s Study and Difficulties of Mathematics

Augustus De Morgan (1806–1871) was recognized for his ability as a teacher of mathematics. His On the Study and Difficulties of Mathematics, originally published in 1831, was intended for young students just beginning their serious study of mathematics. Valued for its intention and advice, it has become an historic document in the history of mathematics education. This edition, the third republishing, was released by Carus Publications in 1910.

A portrait of De Morgan greets the reader as the frontispiece for this book. David Eugene Smith, noted mathematics historian of this period, supplied the picture.

The “Editor’s Note” clarifies the importance of the publication.
