L. E. J. Brouwer: Topologist, Intuitionist, Philosopher: How Mathematics Is Rooted in Life
The Basic Library List Committee suggests that undergraduate mathematics libraries consider this book for acquisition.
Dirk van Dalen's biography of L. E. J. Brouwer was originally published in two volumes by Oxford University Press. (See our reviews: volume one, volume two.) This new edition from Springer brings together both volumes into one large book. The author's preface indicates that
The present biography is a revision of the earlier two volume biography published by Oxford University Press. After these had, so to speak, passed their natural life span, the OUP gracefully agreed to allow me to publish the present version with Springer. The contents have here and there been updated, and some sections have been pruned.
As the author points out, Springer recently published Brouwer's Selected Correspondence, which together with the biography provides excellent coverage of Brouwer's life and ideas.
